Chapter 11

THE REST OF THE WEDDING went exactly as planned. The good thing about going to the emergency room, was that Allie had gotten some medication to help ease the itching. Normally she wouldn’t have taken it without researching all the side effects and weighing the risks. But for Andrew’s wedding, she went ahead and took the medicine.

The meds still left her splotchy, but at least she hadn’t stood at the front of the church itching like a mad woman.

So here it was, Christmas morning, just before dawn, and she was sitting at the kitchen table at Wade’s house, drinking coffee, watching the snow gently drift across the farmland. People had thought she was crazy for spending all that money on a greenhouse for her lavender, but it was nice to know that even in this weather, production continued.

She smiled as she opened her email on her phone again and read the message from Nyssa’s Naturals, an up-and-coming natural beauty company, inviting her to come to their headquarters in Oregon to showcase her products in the new year. If they liked what they saw, all of her financial problems would be over.

Imagine, her products being featured in a number of popular regional boutiques. Of course, she’d have to increase production, but the thing that had always stood in the way was her job. Without a job, she had had plenty of time to resupply her dwindling stock. Perhaps, if this deal went through, she could even hire some people, like Emily, and give them a chance to better themselves. That had always been her hope. Not just finding success for herself, but being able to help others.

The sun was starting to rise, and Emily should be arriving soon. She’d texted Allie to let her know the baby was doing much better, but would need to remain in the hospital for a few days. However, Emily wanted to at least bring by the children’s Christmas presents and spend a few moments with her older children while the baby slept.

She busied herself making whole wheat pancakes so they could all start the day with a healthy breakfast. She’d ground the wheat berries herself, a task she used to enjoy doing, but as her job got busier, she hadn’t had the time for a luxury such as homemade pancakes made completely from scratch. The eggs were fresh from Bigby Farm, and their bright yellow yolks were the color of sunshine, her very favorite color other than lavender. Something inside Allie told her that today was going to be a great day.

Maybe it was because, as the Bible said, every day was a new beginning. This afternoon, she would take the children over to Bigby Farm for the family celebration. And even though she’d be forced to face her mother and the various aunts and uncles- and deal with their unkind remarks- she knew it was going to be all right.

Her phone dinged, and she went to check it, in case it was Emily. With a sigh, she realized too late it was simply an incoming email.
